Biographer Alina García-Lapuerta will discuss her book, La Belle Créole: The Cuban Countess who Captivated Havana, Madrid and Paris, chronicling the story of the acclaimed singer, salon hostess and Cuba’s earliest female author. Mercedes defied all the odds as a 19th century woman, and unraveling her life leads to the little known worlds of colonial Cuba, Napoleonic Spain and the Paris of Balzac and Chopin.
The proposed program includes:
- Introduction, including images of Old Havana by Hermes Mallea author of Great Houses of Havana
- Presentation and reading by the author, including a power point/video presentation with related illustrations
- Q&A with author led by Hermes Mallea
- Book signing
